Kiki Rice, Colin Sahlman Win National Prep Athletes Of Year

The National High School Athlete of the Year awards went to cross-country runner Colin Sahlman and basketball star Kiki Rice.

Rice, of Washington, is the 9th player to win the award sponsored by Gatorade since its launch in 2003. Sahlman of Newbury Park, California is the first male cross-entry athlete to win.

The awards in Los Angeles returned in an individual event Tuesday night for the first time in 3 years. The winners of 2020 received their awards via video and last year’s event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rice was a multi-sport athlete at Washington’s private Sidwell Friends school, averaging 15.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.1 assists last season, leading the Quakers basketball team to a 28-0 record and was a McDonald’s All-American. Rice has been the Gatorade Girls Soccer Player of the Year twice in her field.

Rice, who has won gold medals in the under-16 and under-18 teams, will play for UCLA this fall.

Sahlman recorded the fastest time of 5 kms in US prep grass. Last season at 14.:03.3 I won the national title. Also won the title of the national team to the Newbury High Panthers. Sahlman won the division, state championship and helped the Panthers win the team title and will compete in northern Arizona this fall.

The other girls’ finalists were: Averi Carlson, Natalie Cook, Flower Mound, Keagan Rothrock, Riley Jackson, Juliette Whittaker.

The other boys’ finalists were: Nick Singleton, Gradey Dick, Brock Porter, Jacob Murrell, Cade Flatt.
